Students give golf a try!

May 17, 2012

Sullivan Seventh Day Adventist Church recently used Faithfully Active funds to purchase new P.E. equipment for its private school students.  In addition to tennis equipment and lessons, students were excited to try another new sport – golf!   The kids’ smiles make it all worthwhile!

Students will be able to practice their swing in the large grassy park adjacent to their school.  Next year they hope to visit the Sullivan Golf Course for golf lessons!

TBC gets new equipment

May 4, 2012

Pictured are dedicated wellness group leaders from Temple Baptist Church, proudly displaying new exercise mats, DVDs and other equipment purchased for the church through Missouri Baptist Sullivan Hospital’s Faithfully Active outreach program.

Temple Baptist has implemented biking programs, walking programs, fitness challenges, a senior exercise program, aqua aerobics classes and running groups since the church joined Faithfully Active in 2009.  New mats, exercise bands and DVDs will be used for a more intensive strength training program later this year.  Thanks to group leaders, Mary Ann Eaton, Vicky Koch, Kevin Koch (pictured above) and Michael Morgan, Heidi Blankenship and Melissa West for volunteering to lead programs for their congregation and the community.

Time to get active outdoors!

March 28, 2012

Can you believe this weather?  It seems Spring has arrived early this year, and it’s a great time to get outside for some physical activity!  Don’t forget about all of the GREAT places and spaces in our community where you can enjoy being active outdoors:

  • Meramec State Park  (On Highway 185 South) -  River access, a variety of walking trails, caverns (some open seasonally), camping and Visitor Center
  • Meramec Conservation Area (Past the State Park on the left, Highway 185 South) – paved and unpaved walking trails with restroom facilities
  • Sullivan Fairgrounds (Mattox Drive in Sullivan) - generally a low traffic area in the off season, this is a great place to ride bikes, roller blade, walk, or push strollers
  • Sullivan City Lake (Mattox Drive in Sullivan) – A 0.7 mile loop unpaved trail, fishing (licenses can be purchased at Wal-Mart), restroom facilities
  • Paved Hospital Track  (Mattox Drive in Sullivan)  – a 1/4 mile paved track with benches, a picnic area, outdoor workout stations, and a crosswalk to restroom facilities
  • Long Ridge Conservation Area (Take Highway AF past the airport until it turns into Ridge Road) – seasonal horse and walking trails, stream and camp sites
  • New sidewalks!  -  New sewers in Sullivan mean new sidewalks throughout town that are great for talking a walk on your lunch break or getting out of the house with your kids
  • Sullivan Parks - Includes a skate park, pavillions, playgrounds, ball fields and the others mentioned above!
  • Local Churches – Check with your church about walking programs, use of playgrounds and parking lots for physical activity

If we’ve missed any great places to get active locally, please e-mail suggestions to ele1828@bjc.org, or leave them on this site’s contact form.  You can also send us pictures of your springtime outdoor adventures and we will post them!
